Bleaching of hair

Hair bleaching: How to care for your hair before and after a chemical treatment

Hair bleaching is an effective way to make hair lighter, but the process is also one of the more demanding chemical treatments you can subject your hair to. When the hair is bleached, the structure of the hair strand itself changes, and therefore the hair can subsequently feel more dry, porous, fragile or difficult to manage. Research shows that bleaching can affect both the outer layer of the hair and the internal structures of the hair shaft.

This does not mean that you must necessarily avoid bleaching your hair. But if you want light hair that looks well-groomed at the same time, care should be as important a part of the process as the color itself.

Especially after repeated bleaching, the hair may need more moisture, gentle handling and products developed for dry or chemically treated hair. A good routine cannot make bleached hair identical to untreated hair again, but it can help improve the feel, look and manageability of the hair.

What happens to the hair during bleaching?

To understand why care is so important, it's helpful to know what actually happens during a bleaching session.

Hair color is determined, among other things, by pigments in the hair shaft. When bleaching, a chemical process is used which breaks down these pigments so that the hair becomes lighter. For the process to take place, the bleaching agent must affect the outer layer of the hair and penetrate the hair shaft.

It is precisely this process that can make the hair more exposed.

Studies of bleached hair have shown, among other things, damage to the cuticle and cortex of the hair, which can affect the structural integrity of the hair strand. The more intensive and repeated the chemical treatment, the greater the stress on the hair can be.

It is therefore not unusual for bleached hair to subsequently feel different from the hair's natural length.

Typical signs of hair affected by bleaching

How the hair reacts to bleaching varies. The starting point, the hair's previous treatments, how strong the bleaching is and how often the hair is treated all play a role.

Some of the most common signs of stressed hair are:

  • Dry lengths

  • More mugs

  • Hair that tangles more easily

  • Less shine

  • Split ends

  • Hair that breaks more easily

  • A rough or porous feel

The hair may also have changed elasticity and feel weaker when wet.

If hair starts to break significantly after bleaching, this is a clear sign that it needs a break from further chemical treatments.

Care should begin even before bleaching

Good hair care after bleaching is important, but it can also be beneficial to think about the condition of the hair before the treatment.

If the hair is already very dry, breaks easily or has previously been heavily chemically treated, another bleaching can make the problem worse.

It may therefore be worth considering:

  • How often the hair has previously been bleached

  • If the lengths already feel very dry

  • Whether the hair breaks when brushing

  • If the hair is exposed to too much heat at the same time

  • If previously bleached lengths run the risk of being treated again

Particularly major color changes can be advantageously assessed by a professional hairdresser who can take the hair's starting point into account.

Hair treatment can become an important part of the routine

When the hair has been chemically treated, a regular shampoo and conditioner alone may be insufficient if the lengths feel very dry.

Here, a hair treatment can be used as a more intensive part of the care routine.

A hair treatment can be developed with a focus on, among other things, moisture, softness, strength or manageability. Hair Souk's selection of hair treatments includes, for example, various deep treatment products for dry, damaged and chemically treated hair.

If the hair has become dry after bleaching, it may therefore be relevant to supplement the regular care with one hair treatment for intensive care.

How often a hair treatment should be used depends on the individual product and the needs of the hair. Therefore, always follow the instructions on the product rather than assume that a longer treatment time automatically gives a better result.

Moisture and strength must be in balance

Bleached hair is often referred to as hair that "lacks moisture", but care is not necessarily just about adding as much moisture as possible.

Hair care products have different functions. Some are primarily moisturizing and emollient, while others contain ingredients developed with a focus on strength or surface care.

How the hair reacts to different products also depends on the hair type. Thick, curly lengths, for example, may have different needs than very fine hair, which quickly becomes weighed down by heavy products.

Therefore, it makes sense to adjust the routine according to how the hair feels, rather than simply using as many products as possible.

Be extra careful when hair is wet

Wet hair should generally be treated gently, and this is particularly relevant if the hair is already affected by chemical treatments.

Avoid harsh brushing and aggressive movements with the towel. Instead, you can gently squeeze the water out of the hair and comb it out with a suitable brush or comb.

Feel free to start at the tips and gradually work your way up through the lengths. In this way, you reduce the pulling of the hair when you encounter a knot.

If the hair tangles a lot after bleaching, conditioner and other straightening products can make it easier to handle without unnecessary mechanical stress.

Limit extra heat after bleaching

Bleaching is already a strain on the hair shaft. If the hair is simultaneously exposed to too much heat from straighteners, curling irons or blow-drying at high temperatures, it can further contribute to hair damage.

Dermatological recommendations for gentle hair care include reducing the use of high heat and using lower temperatures when styling.

You don't necessarily have to ditch all styling, but it can be an advantage to:

  • Blow dry at a lower temperature

  • Reduce the use of straighteners and curling irons

  • Avoid repeated heat treatments of the same area

  • Use heat protection products

  • Allow hair to partially air dry when practical

The more stressed the hair is after bleaching, the gentler the styling should be.

Oil and serum can protect the appearance of the lengths

A hair treatment and a hair oil do not necessarily have the same function.

Where the hair treatment is typically used as a more intensive treatment, oil and serum are often used in smaller quantities on lengths and ends. Among other things, the products can help make the hair shinier, softer and easier to handle.

It can be particularly relevant after bleaching, when the surface of the hair can feel rougher and the ends become dry more easily.

There are different types oil and serum for the hair, and it can be advantageous to choose a product according to hair type and needs. Hair Souk carries this type of product as a separate hair care category.

If you have very fine hair, a small amount may be sufficient. If you have thick, dry or curly hair, the hair can often handle richer products.

Avoid overlapping the bleaching unnecessarily

One of the most important things about repeated bleaching is to pay attention to which areas have already been treated.

If the entire length of the hair is bleached again and again, the same hair strands are exposed to repeated chemical processes. Research shows that excessive bleaching can cause significant structural damage to the hair shaft.

When growing out, it is therefore often relevant to primarily work with the new hair rather than automatically bleaching all lengths again.

This is also one of the reasons why larger bleaching projects are often easier to handle at a hairdresser, especially if the hair already has several different color treatments in the lengths.

Do not wash hair harder than necessary

The way you wash your hair can also play a role in how bleached lengths feel.

Shampoo is primarily relevant in the scalp, where fat, sweat and product residues accumulate. It is rarely necessary to rub the lengths vigorously during each wash.

When the shampoo is rinsed out, it still runs through the rest of the hair.

After washing, conditioner or hair conditioner can be used on the lengths as needed.

If you have dry bleached hair, it may also be worth paying attention to whether very frequent hair washing makes the lengths even drier. However, the correct washing frequency depends on both scalp, hair type, activity and which styling products you use.

Bleached curly hair requires special attention

If the hair is naturally curly, wavy or very textured, bleaching can also affect the way the curls feel and form.

Curly hair can already have a tendency towards dryness, because the scalp's natural oils do not move through the lengths as easily as in very straight hair.

After chemical treatment, the need for moisturizing and softening care can therefore become even more apparent.

Here it is particularly important to avoid unnecessary friction, hard brushing and too much heat. At the same time, the products should be chosen according to the thickness and structure of the hair, so that the curls are cared for without becoming unnecessarily heavy.

Split ends cannot be groomed completely

Products can make split or dry ends look smoother and more collected, but a split hair fiber cannot be permanently repaired with cosmetic care.

If the tips are very worn, a haircut may therefore be necessary.

This does not mean that oil, serum or hair treatment are superfluous. They can still make lengths more manageable and reduce the rough feel, but it's important to have realistic expectations of what hair care can do.

Give your hair a break between chemical treatments

If the hair feels very dry or fragile after bleaching, the best next treatment is not necessarily another bleaching.

It may be better to let the hair have time without new powerful chemical processes.

During this period, the focus can be on:

  • Regular and gentle hair care

  • Hair treatment as needed

  • Conditioner when washing

  • Oil or serum in the lengths

  • Less heat styling

  • Gentle investigation

  • Cutting very worn tips

Bleached hair cannot be returned to its original, untreated structure because the chemical process has already changed the hair shaft. Therefore, good care is mainly about protecting the hair you have and reducing additional stress.
Hair oil is applied to the lengths to care for and add moisture to bleached hair.

A good routine makes a big difference after bleaching

Bleaching hair allows for major color changes, but it also places greater demands on the subsequent care. The lighter you go and the more times the hair is treated, the more important it becomes to pay attention to the condition of the hair.

A good routine does not have to consist of a large number of products. The most important thing is to choose products that suit the hair type, be consistent with the care and avoid combining chemical treatment with an unnecessary amount of heat and mechanical wear.

Hair treatment can provide more intensive care for dry lengths, while oil and serum can be good products for daily or continuous care of the tips. At the same time, gentle washing, careful detangling and fewer stressful treatments are at least as important.

That way, you can still enjoy the result of lighter hair, while giving the lengths the best possible conditions to feel soft, strong and well-groomed.
